Vancouver BC Canada,DIM Cinema, Pacific Cinematheque Theatre.

From Aniconism to Bliss: Media art shows its Islamic roots Curated by Laura U Marks.

Particle bursts, mystical abstraction, and an intelligent suspicion of figurative images—qualities of some of the most thrilling media art works have deep origins in the great arts of Islam. Film, video, and digital works from the 1960s to the 2000 celebrate, knowingly or not, their Islamic origins. Mounir Fatmi and Peggy Ahwesh propose a sober aniconism in response to a contemporary image-world of pornography and murder. In works by Takeshi Murata and Cory Arcangel a giddy iconoclasm takes over. Doug Richardson’s analog vector experiments, Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries’ insistent jazzy textualism, and Usama Alshaibi’s shimmying geometries celebrate the liberation from image making. The pixelline universe twinkles in the works of Walid Ra’ad, Paul Sharits, and Ghieth al-Amine, and finally Eric Siegel’s analog abstractions take us into the blissful beyond of the image.

Media works by: Peggy Ahwesh, Gahith Al-Amine, Usama Alshaibi, Cory Arcangel, Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries, Mounir Fatmi, Takeshi Murata, Walid Ra’ad, Doug Richardson, Paul Sharits, and Eric Siegel.

This program by Laura U. Marks coincides with the publication of her book Enfoldment and Infinity: An Islamic Genealogy of New Media Art. Presented in conjunction with the book’s launch at Centre A on Monday, September 13.

Husband and wife collaborators Usama and Kristie Alshaibi are presenting some rarely seen short videos created between 1997 and 2010. This will include early 16mm films by both directors as well as a number of collaborations shot on a wide array of mediums.

In addition, we will premiere a trailer of Usama’s new feature length movie, “Profane.”

The Alshaibis will be selling copies of their limited edition book A History of Flying Vaginas and their DVD of short artfully perverse films titled “Solar Anus Cinema.”

The event is FREE. But please help the Alshaibis in any way you can by buying merchandise or contributing to http://profanemovie.com to help raise finishing funds for the new feature. BYOB.
